Especially most glass bowls need a screen, a stone or a glass filter or something similar to prevent the burnt content of the bowl from falling into the water. Screens are placed in the bowl before filling it. Also with bowls which don't need a screen they come in handy because if nothing else they help keeping the downpipe clean by preventing lumps from slipping down into the bong.
